Attempting to Surf in Yamba
From Port Macquarie to Yamba, my journey continues, and the adventures keep coming. The weather may have taken a turn for the worse with the persistent storm clouds that hover up above, but the fun hasn’t stopped.
After Port Macquarie came Coffs Harbour, another place often missed out by tourists. Yet again there is a lot for the surfer here, with good waves for surfing, body boarding as well as kite surfing. There is also a protected area in the harbour for swimmers to enjoy the water without fear of being stung by the jellyfish.
From here I travelled to Yamba, a place that saw me attempt surfing for the first time. With it’s unpopulated beaches and good surf, it is the ideal place to learn. This is a complete contrast to somewhere like Byron Bay, where masses of people descend upon the main beaches to learn with no space to move, let alone surf. It wasn’t a complete disaster for me as I managed to stand on my first attempt, but every go after saw me plummet into the water. I think I am getting the hang of it though. It was refreshing to see a girl who has only been surfing for a month, take to the water and rip the waves apart like a professional. One day I could be there.
My next stop is indeed Byron Bay, but I don’t think it will be a long stop. It will be nice to see the beaches and experience life in the fast lane, but with the weather as bed as it is currently, there might not be a lot of sightseeing going on. I will have to keep my fingers crossed for better weather.
My next post will be along soon, so don’t miss it.

What is Byron Bay like, and what has been your favourite place so far, and why?
Byron was good, nice beaches, nice town etc, but not my favourite place I have to admit. I think Yamba was pretty cool, thanks largely to Shane in the YHA there, great fun. Newcastle was great, and now Noosa seems really cool so far. I seem to be liking the smaller places better, more relaxing, you know.
