Day 1 as a Cleaner in Port Macquarie

29 January 2013 One Comment

Saturday 23rd April 2011 – Port Macquarie, Australia

Today was the first day in my new job as hostel cleaner in Port Macquarie Backpackers. I was up and ready by 9:30am and went to see Tony and Vera for instructions. I wouldn’t say I was excited, but it was the first step in extending my stay in Australia.

The first day was all about watching Tony and seeing what he does. This hostel is one of the cleanest and most well maintained hostels I have ever stayed in, and it’s clear to see why. They have high standards here, and everything is to be done a particular way or you do it again. It was a lot to take in and I was anxious about getting it right, but as long as I do my best, I can’t go wrong.

The bathrooms were all cleaned, beds were stripped and sheets washed. New sheets were put on the bed and the kitchen was cleaned. Floors were vacuumed and things put away in their rightful place. It was 1:30pm when I finally finished, four hours later, and I felt exhausted. A shower was very much needed at this point, and I could be certain they were clean.

With day one under the carpet I had lunch and spent the afternoon down by the beach. As I sat on a protruding rock overlooking the sea and the beach below, I watched people come and go. Families gathered for food whilst the children paddled in the water. Some local lads were out in the water catching the waves on their surf boards. I love people watching as it fascinates me so much. I wonder what I would be doing now if this was my beach and I was a local. Would I be in the water surfing or would I be with friends, laughing about and eating barbecued food? Would I be sat on the beach admiring the beautiful scenes of the sun disappearing behind the horizon, or would I be sat on this very rock watching it all happen like I am now?

The sun setting was particularly beautiful this evening. I only wish I could experience it with somebody close to me. For now I would have to store it all up as memories, ready for recollection and regurgitation when I get back home. Port Macquarie is a lovely place to be.
