Monday 31st January 2011 – Sydney, Australia

My last day in Sydney had arrived, and it felt as though the past 2 weeks had flown by very quickly indeed. I was left to reflect on a good start to my Australian adventure. I wanted to make the most of my last day and so a trip to Taronga Zoo seemed like the perfect option.

I first had to spend part of the morning sorting out my Australian bank account in the nearby Commonwealth Bank. I was able to pick up my bank card today, and I just had to finalise all the paperwork with a signature or two. Once everything was completed, I was able to go with my new bank account fully set up. I could now head to the zoo.

In order to get to the zoo, you need to take a ferry across, and the ferry operates from the Circular Quay Harbour, along with all the other ferries. I bought my ticket and boarded the ferry, destination: Taronga Zoo. It was yet another hot day, and my hat was firmly affixed to my head as always as I sat on the deck of the ferry in the sun’s warm rays. We arrived at the zoo and I stepped off the ferry.

There was a Sky Wire chair lift that took you into the zoo, and from here you can look down on the entire zoo as you climb to the top of the hill on the lift. We passed the Elephant enclosure and they were in the middle of a show, with some animals kicking a ball about to one another. I had missed this show, and I soon realised this was the last Elephant show of the day. Oh well, I had arrived a bit late. I wondered what else I would have missed.

I had a look at the map once in the zoo to make a note of all the shows I wanted to see, and made sure I was in the right place of the park at the right time. First off was the sea lion show. I must admit I felt a little silly being here, especially as it’s nothing I haven’t already seen before, but many years ago as a child. These places are definitely catered towards the younger generation. I sat and appreciated it nonetheless, and it wasn’t bad actually.

Next was the spider show, and this was more up my street. We got to see many dangerous spiders, and were able to touch some other animals that were brought around to us, namely lizards. I was interested to find out that Sydney has the most dangerous of all spiders, the Funnel Web, and it is the most dangerous funnel web of them all that resides in and around Sydney. I would be keeping my eyes peeled from now on. I want to see a spider and a snake in the wild while in Australia. It was all very fascinating, and the rest of the zoo was much like any other, so it wasn’t too long before I had seen all I wanted to see, and got the sky wire back down to the ferry.

I headed for home and grabbed a takeaway en-route. I spent much of the evening sorting my things and packing for tomorrow’s trip to Newcastle to see Katie again. I adjusted my straps on my backpack, and suddenly it was much easier to lift the bag, or at least much more comfortable. If only I had done this sooner. Anyway, it would be more manageable from here on in. It just goes to show, the adjustments are there for a reason. I chilled out the rest of the evening in my room, still being the only one actually in the room.
