Travelling, and the Issues Regarding Internet Security
Over the past 7 or 8 years that I have been traveling, it is clear for me to see that times have changed. Technology is moving on at an alarming pace, and it seems we are all busting a gut to keep up. Most people have a hand-held device of some sort, and many take them along on their travels. As I am one of these people, and always have my mini laptop with me, I felt it appropriate to talk a little about security.
I have been the victim of crime once or twice whilst abroad. I have had my car broken into in Portugal, and have been jumped on at a cash point in France. Through one reason or another I was lucky enough to get away with having nothing stolen. This is because I am very safety conscious, and I value the things I have with me. Security is always high on my list, and whilst I could never guarantee never being a target again, I know I am doing more than most to protect myself.
During my adventures to date I have met a lot of people who have had expensive camera equipment or computers stolen. Mobile phones have gone missing and money has been swiped from wallets or purses, often in rooms where I have been staying. Needless to say I have nothing to do with any of these instances, honestly. But I do feel sorry for those who have been a victim, and how it can potentially ruin a trip of a lifetime.
The most important area of security for me is not necessarily having anything stolen, but having sensitive information hacked from my laptop over the internet. My laptop itself is worth nothing, but when I am surfing online and handing over credit card details to book flights or hostels, I want to know I have a level of protection keeping me safe from unwanted attention.
The majority of travellers have access to the internet nowadays, often by phone or by laptop, so internet security is a growing issue and must be addressed if you are serious about being safe whilst traveling. There are many companies offering internet security, and many software packages are available at affordable prices. Norton for example is widely used by many, and can give you the peace of mind you will need during stressful times.
You only have to look at the sheer number of people who own a handheld device nowadays to know that internet security is vital. Technology is growing all the time, and so is the potential threat of hackers and viruses from online sources. Take the time to make sure you are protected, and don’t let anybody ruin your time abroad.
