15 November 2012 No Comment

Walking holidays are increasingly popular as people seek greener or cheaper ways to enjoy their time away. The benefits are only just beginning to be fully appreciated, however. it is well known that exercise is good for you and we now understand that there are more far reaching advantages.

Good For Your Mind

Exercise such as walking releases some important chemicals in the brain such as adrenaline and endorphins that make you feel great. They are important in mood boosting, creating a positive attitude and they are a key element in fighting depression, stress and other mental health issues. Not only the hormones are good for your mind, however! Studies have shown that the simple rhythmic act of placing one foot in front of another for a period of time is stress reducing, creating something of a simple meditative state. Walking also keeps you young, increasing blood flow to the brain and in turn improving thinking skills, helping with memory retention and slowing the ageing process.

Good For Your Body

Walking HolidayNot only is walking the best way to burn calories and lose weight, regular walkers also live longer on average than non walkers. Two miles a day cuts the risk of death from a variety of diseases almost by half and this includes for some cancers. It is a form of aerobic exercise that strengthens your bones, lungs and heart as well as helping you to control your weight. If twenty minutes a day will lose you half a stone in a year, just imagine what a walking holiday can do for your waistline! Plus all those endorphins and the act of walking every day will help to create the habit of walking more, giving you so much more than just great memories to take with you into every day life.

Good For Your Planet

Walking HolidayWalking holidays require transport to get to but once on your walking tour you are not driving or using public transport, saving you money and cutting carbon emissions. Whilst you are exploring an area and taking in its charms you are not consuming and wasting on the same scale that other holidays can encourage. Not only that but being so close to nature, without the barrier of a window, can make you really appreciate it and increase your desire to keep it pristine.

Walking holidays combine all the things that are really good for you in one fantastic experience. From healthier habits to helping save the planet there are so many reasons to walk more and taking this kind of holiday is not only healthy for your mind and body it is also one of the most pleasurable ways you can spend your break. In your lifetime you will walk approximately the equivalent of three times around the world. Why not make some of those steps in beautiful scenery and relax whilst you are at it?
